The air brakes endorsement applies to applicants who wish to drive a vehicle with air brakes in Class A, B, or C CDL. To drive a vehicle with air brakes, you must pass the air brake component of the Indiana CDL knowledge test. The IN CDL air brakes test consists of 25 questions, and you'll need at least 20 correct answers to pass (80%). The test covers the information found in the air brakes section of the Indiana CDL Manual. Take this IN CDL practice test now to prepare for the actual air brakes test!
1. If you perform the skills test in a vehicle that is not equipped with air brakes:
you will be required to operate a CMV without hydraulic brakes.
you will be restricted from operating vehicles with air brakes.
you will be required to operate vehicles with air brakes.
you will be required to take the tank vehicle test.
2. Your vehicle has hydraulic brakes. When you press the brake pedal while driving and the pedal goes to the floor, remember that:
shifting into neutral may help slow the vehicle.
the parking brake should never used to slow the vehicle.
pumping the brake pedal may generate enough hydraulic pressure to stop the vehicle.
All of the above.
3. Most heavy-duty vehicles use:
triple air brake systems.
pump-the-brake systems.
dual air brake systems.
single air brake systems.
4. What factors can cause brakes to fade or fail?
Not taking your foot off the accelerator.
Not pressing the brake pedal hard enough.
Going too slow.
Overheating, low air pressure or water in the air tanks.
5. Some air brake systems have an alcohol evaporator. Checking the alcohol container and filling it up as necessary:
helps you avoid wheel lock up.
reduces the risk of ice in air brake valves during cold weather.
reduces the risk of having an accident due to drowsy driving.
helps keep the engine cool, as well as lubricating it.
6. Some air brake systems have an alcohol evaporator to:
reduce the danger of slipping.
reduce the stopping power of the vehicle.
prevent ice from forming in the brake system.
force the brake shoes away from one another.
7. During a trip you should check:
pressure gauges.
temperature gauges.
mirrors.
All of the above.
8. Brake drums or discs must not have cracks longer than ____ the width of the friction area.
1/2
1/3
1/4
1/5
9. An alcohol evaporator:
protects the air brake system from too much pressure.
to hold compressed air.
used to reduce the chance of the front wheels skidding.
is used to reduce the risk of ice in air brake valves and other parts during cold weather.
10. To test the air leakage rate, with a fully-charged air system you should ____________ and time the air pressure drop.
check the air compressor's drive belt, chock the wheels
turn off the engine, release the parking brake
put alcohol into the air system, run the engine at a fast idle
release the parking brake, leave the engine running
