The air brakes endorsement applies to applicants who wish to drive a vehicle with air brakes in Class A, B, or C CDL. To drive a vehicle with air brakes, you must pass the air brake component of the Kentucky CDL knowledge test. The KY CDL air brakes test consists of 25 questions, and you'll need at least 20 correct answers to pass (80%). The test covers the information found in the air brakes section of the Kentucky CDL Manual. Take this KY CDL practice test now to prepare for the actual air brakes test!
1. With a dual air brake system:
each system shares the same lines and hoses.
each system has its own air tanks, hoses and lines.
one system is the main braking system while the other is a back-up system.
each system shares air tanks.
2. Which of the following is NOT part of the drum brake?
Safety valve
Axle
Return spring
Brake drum
3. The service brake applies and releases:
the parking brake when you use the parking brake control.
the brake in an emergency situation.
the brake when you use the brake pedal during normal driving.
None of the above.
4. The alcohol evaporator:
eliminates the need for daily air tank drainage.
ensures the coolant temperature gauge remains in the normal range.
helps to reduce the risk of ice in air brake valves and other parts in cold weather.
shows how much air pressure you are applying to the brakes.
5. When driving on slippery roads, you should NOT:
use the engine brake.
try to anticipate stops early.
go slowly.
watch far enough ahead to keep a steady speed.
6. Slack adjusters:
regulate the distance that the air brake has to travel to apply friction to the wheel.
regulate the distance between the rear wheels.
are available in four types: manual, automatic, robotic and analog.
should move more than one inch where the push rods attach to them.
7. An ABS system:
gives you more control over the vehicle during braking.
helps you avoid skids caused by over braking.
keep your wheels from locking when you brake hard.
All of the above.
8. Air tanks must be drained because:
if you don't drain the tanks yourself, your battery fluid may drain out.
if one air system is low on pressure, the rear brakes will not be operating fully.
when you push the brake pedal, air is let into each brake chamber.
compressed air usually has some water in it. The water can freeze in cold weather and cause brake failure.
9. An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS):
lets you drive faster.
increases your normal braking capability.
always shortens your stopping distance.
keeps your wheels from locking up when you brake hard.
10. The braking power of the spring brakes:
is not affected by the condition of the service brakes.
depends on the brakes being in adjustment.
is not affected by the air pressure level.
All of the above.
