Yes, you have up to 90 days to secure a Texas driver license.

TEXAS LEARNER LICENSE

Who can apply for a Texas learner license?

Any resident who is at least 15 years of age but younger than 18 years of age.

What are the requirements to obtain a learner license?

  • Complete the classroom driver education;
  • Pass the vision and knowledge exams;
  • Provide the Verification of Enrollment and Attendance form issued by your school;
  • Meet the general requirements for a first driver license applicant.

Do I have any restriction with my learner license?

You can practice driving only if accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age and has at least 1 year of driving experience.

How long is my learner license valid?

Until you turn 18.

PROVISIONAL LICENSE

How can I obtain my provisional license?

  • Be at least 16 years old;
  • Hold your learner license for at least 6 consecutive months without committing any violation;
  • Pass your driving exam.

Which restrictions do I have with my provisional license?

You are not allowed to drive with more than 1 passenger under 21 years of age (other than a family member) on board and between midnight and 5 am. You must not use any wireless communication device.

How long is my provisional license valid?

How can I register for my Texas knowledge exam?

Contact your local driver license office.

How many questions are on the Texas DPS knowledge exam?

You have to answer 25 multiple choice questions.

What is the score required to pass the test?

You need to score 70% or higher (at least 18 correct answers).

Study the official Texas Driver Handbook, then practice with our DMV written tests!

I failed my knowledge test. What do I have to do?

You are allowed a second and a third attempt as soon as you feel ready to. After the third attempt you will have to begin the licensing process all over again.

Where can I take my driving exam?

At a DPS driver license office or through a Third Party Skills Testing school (TPST).

Can I drive to the examination location?

No, a licensed driver must accompany you.

What do I have to do during my exam?

  • Follow the instruction;
  • Do not carry on a conversation;
  • You will not be asked to do anything illegal;
  • Drive safely.

Which skills are graded during the driving exam?

Control, observation, positioning, signaling.

I failed my driving exam. What do I have to do?

You will need to schedule another appointment with the DPS or the TPST school.
