Any driver, regardless of the vehicle Class, who wants to haul hazardous materials, must add an “H” endorsement to their CDL. In order to obtain the Hazmat endorsement drivers are required to pass a Transportation Security Administration background check and a knowledge test. The Louisiana hazmat test consists of 30 questions. To pass, you must correctly answer at least 24 questions (80%). The LA CDL hazmat test covers the information found in the Louisiana CDL Manual. If you are 15 or 16 years old, you must adhere to the stages of the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Program:
  • Stage 1 ? for a learner’s permit, you must be at least 15 years old.
  • Stage 2 ? for an intermediate license, you must be at least 16 years old and have held the permit for 6 months.
  • Stage 3 ? for a full license (class E), you must have completed stages 1 and 2 or be at least 17 years old.

The DMV written test contains 40 questions regarding road signs, safe driving practices, and road rules. All questions are multiple-choice, so be sure to carefully read them before providing your answers.

You must answer at least 32 questions correctly, and you can miss up to 8 questions to pass the test. The minimum score required to succeed in the exam is 80%. Take your time during the exam to make sure you understand the questions well.

Under the Graduated Licensing Program, teens face specific restrictions.

Drivers with a learner’s permit:
  • Must drive with a licensed adult who is at least 21 years old, or a licensed family member who is at least 18 years old.
  • Cannot use a cell phone.

Drivers with an intermediate license:
  • Are restricted from driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by a licensed adult who is at least 21 years old or a licensed family member who is at least 18 years old.
  • Can only transport one passenger under 21 (excluding siblings) unless supervised by a licensed adult aged 21 or older between 6 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • Cannot use a cell phone, except for emergencies. 

If you fail your DMV written test at a driver education provider, the policies vary depending on the driving school. Some may require you to pay for a retest, while others may include multiple attempts in the course. Be sure to check the specific rules of the driving school you are attending. If you fail the permit test at the Office of Motor Vehicles, you have the opportunity to retake the exam once on the same day, provided there is enough time available.
