Frequently Asked Questions
New Jersey residents who have never had a class D driver license must follow the age requirements of the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program. There are three options:
- If you are 16 and enrolled in an approved behind-the-wheel driver training course, you can apply for a special learner permit. When you reach 17, you are ready to apply for a probationary license after practicing for at least six months. After one year of unsupervised driving, you can get a basic driver license at 18.
- If you are not enrolled in a driver course, you can obtain an examination permit at least at 17 years old. After six months of supervising driving, you can get a probationary license. After one year of unsupervised driving, you can get a basic driver license at 18.
- If you are 21 years old, after obtaining the permit and three months of supervising driving, you can get a probationary license. After one year of unsupervised driving, you can get a basic driver license.
If you are enrolled in a driver education class, you can schedule your DMV written test at the driving school. Alternatively, you can purchase an examination permit at a New Jersey driver testing center and then make an appointment for the knowledge test.
