The school bus endorsement applies to applicants who wish to drive a school bus in any Class A or B CDL. To add an S endorsement to your CLP/CDL, you must pass the Utah school bus test, and you must also pass skills tests in a school bus. The UT CDL bus test consists of 20 questions, and you'll need at least 16 correct answers to pass (80%). The knowledge test covers the following sections of the Utah CDL Manual: School Buses, Vehicle Inspection Test, Basic Control Skills Test and Road Test. Frequently Asked Questions

To obtain an entry-level learner permit in Utah, you must be 15 years old. After obtaining the permit, you can apply for a class D driver license. Here are the requirements:
  • If you are 17 or younger, it’s mandatory to complete a driver education course and hold the permit for six months.
  • If you're 18, driver education is mandatory, but the six-month waiting period with the learner permit is not required.
  • If you're over 19, driver education is not obligatory, but you must hold your learner permit for 90 days if you don’t complete a driver education course.
Your license will be provisional until you turn 21 years old.


Once you've completed the learner permit application, you can schedule an appointment for your visit at any Utah Driver License office. If you are under 19, please note that you are required to complete 27 hours of high school classroom instruction, or 18 hours of private school instruction, or 30 hours of a Utah-approved online course to prepare for the written test.

When visiting the driver license office, ensure you bring:
  • One proof of identity (if your name has changed, bring legal documentation)
  • Two proofs of Utah residency
  • Proof of your Social Security number

Restrictions with a learner permit:
  • If you are 15, 16, or 17 years old, you can drive only if accompanied by an approved driving instructor, parent, or legal guardian who is a licensed driver, occupying the seat beside you. You can also transport other passengers.
  • If you are 18 years or older, you can drive only if accompanied by a person 21 years or older, who is a licensed driver and occupies the seat beside you. You can also transport other passengers.
Restrictions with a driver license:
  • If you are under 17 years old, you can drive alone except from 12 am to 5 am unless:
- accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old, occupying the seat beside you;
- for agricultural, work, or school activities;
- in emergency situations.
  • If you are under 18, for the first six months after obtaining your driver's license, you can transport only family members unless accompanied by a licensed driver who is 21 years or older, or for agricultural assignments or emergencies.

The Utah permit remains valid for a duration of 18 months. If you need to renew your permit or if it expires, you have to pay a fee, complete the application process again, and retake the DMV written test.

If you fail your DMV written test in Utah, you have three chances to pass the exam within six months. If you don't pass after three attempts, you must pay another fee for three additional attempts within six months.
