Frequently Asked Questions

In Georgia, you must be at least 15 years old to apply for a class CP learner’s permit. Once you turn 16, you can get a class D provisional license. At 18 years old, you are ready for the full class C driver’s license.

To schedule your DMV written test in Georgia, start by completing the online permit form. Knowledge exams are available on a walk-in basis at every Georgia Department of Driver Services Center. Choose a DDS Customer Service Center and ensure that you visit it within 60 days from the time you submit the application form.
You must bring the following documents:

  • One primary identification document (such as a U.S. passport, birth certificate, certificate of citizenship, etc.). If your name is different, you must provide legal proof of the name change.
  • Proof of Social Security Number.
  • Two proofs of residency (utility bills, employer documentation, credit card statements, etc.).
  • Proof of School Enrollment (if you are under the age of 18).

For Non-U.S. citizens, additional documents are required. Check the complete list here.

The exam includes two tests: the road rules test and the road signs test. The first is available in several languages, including English, Arabic, Chinese, Dari, Farsi, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, and Vietnamese. The second is offered only in English since all drivers are required to read and understand road signs. If you have a reading disability or hearing impairment, you can schedule an appointment for an oral exam or arrange for an interpreter.

To prepare for the DMV written test, you can refer to the official Georgia Driver's Handbook. The manual covers various information about road rules, traffic signs, and safe driving practices. Study carefully the different sections and test your knowledge with our free practice tests!

The Georgia DMV written test is divided into two parts: the road rules test and the road signs test. Each part consists of 20 questions (40 questions for the entire exam). The first part assesses your understanding of driving laws. During the second part, you'll be asked to identify specific signals and markers. Be prepared by reading the handbook carefully.

You are allowed up to 5 wrong answers on each part of the test. This means that the passing score is 75%. It's important to stay focused during the exam and take the time to read the questions carefully to minimize errors and pass the test on the first attempt.

The restrictions for new drivers in Georgia vary based on the class of the permit/license, not the age of the driver:

  • Drivers with a learner’s permit must be accompanied by an individual who is at least 21 years old with a valid class C driver’s license in the front passenger seat.
  • Drivers with a class D provisional license are not allowed to drive alone between midnight and 5 a.m. During the first six months, they can transport only family members. In the second six months, they may have an additional passenger under 21 years of age who is not a member of their immediate family. After one year from the date of issuance, only 3 passengers are allowed.

It is important to note that these restrictions still apply if drivers are 18 and hold a class D driver’s license. However, at the age of 18, they can apply for a class C driver’s license with no restrictions.

In Georgia, an instruction permit is valid for two years. This ensures you have enough time to practice driving and fulfill the necessary requirements before the road test.
If you fail the road rules test or the road signs test, you are required to retake the portion you have failed. For the first failure, you must wait until the next day, while for the second or subsequent failure, you must wait 7 days. Each time you take the exam, you are required to pay a new fee.
