The passenger endorsement applies to drivers who want to drive a bus in any Class A, B, or C CDL. Applicants must pass a special knowledge test, and must pass skills tests in a passenger vehicle. The Hawaii CDL passenger test consists of 20 questions. To pass, you must correctly answer at least 16 questions (80%). Frequently Asked Questions

For individuals under 18, Hawaii has introduced a graduated licensing program with specific age requirements for each stage:

  • Instructional permit ? you need to be at least 15 ½ years old.
  • Provisional license ? you need to be between 16 and 18 years old and have held a permit for at least 6 months with no traffic violations.
  • Full driver’s license (class 3) ? you need to be 17 and have held a provisional license for at least 6 months.

To take the DMV written test in Hawaii, make sure to bring the following documents on the day of the exam:
  • A compiled and printed driver license application

The Hawaii DMV test consists of 30 questions about various aspects of driving regulations and road safety. These questions are based on the official manual, so it's important to study it well to maximize your chances of passing the exam.

When you get the instructional permit, you can drive only under the supervision of a driver aged 21 or older. After obtaining a provisional driver's license, the following restrictions apply:

  • You cannot transport more than one person under 18 without the supervision of a licensed parent/legal guardian, except for your family members.
  • You are not allowed to drive between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. without supervision, unless for school or work activities approved by your parents or your employer.
The Hawaii instruction permit is valid for one year from the date of issuance. It can be renewed within 30 days before the expiration date or up to 90 days after the expiration date. However, if the permit is not renewed within 30 days after expiration, you have to wait 180 days before taking the road test.
