All residents who operate a motor vehicle on any South Dakota street or highway must have an South Dakota driver’s license or learner's permit. To obtain an instruction permit, you must be at least 14 years of age and pass the vision and knowledge test. The South Dakota written test covers the contents of the South Dakota Driver's Manual, and includes questions on safe driving practices, road rules, road signs and signals. The SD DMV knowledge test consists of 25 questions, and you must score 80% or higher (at least 20 correct answers) to pass. Practice with this sample DMV test to get ready for the official South Dakota written test.
1. Drivers must obey instructions from school crossing guards:
During school hours only.
Only in front of a school.
At all times.
2. The gates at a railroad crossing are down and red lights are flashing. Drivers should:
Stop and proceed only when the gates are raised and the lights have stopped flashing.
Proceed with caution.
Come to a complete stop, then drive around the gates.
3. Drivers should use their high beams at night:
When following other vehicles.
Unless oncoming traffic is approaching.
Only if it becomes necessary.
4. As you drive on the freeway, make sure:
To turn off the directional signal before changing lanes.
To signal all lane changes.
To cut off the vehicles behind you when changing lanes.
5. When driving in heavy rain, drivers should use:
High beam headlights.
Low beam headlights.
Emergency flashers.
