The Arizona DMV written test consists of 30 multiple-choice questions and is based on the information provided in the manual. Remember, you have 30 minutes to complete the exam. Taking numerous practice tests and thoroughly studying the handbook will increase your chances of success.

To pass the exam, you need a score of 80% or higher. You should get at least 24 questions right, and you're allowed to miss up to 6 questions out of the total 30. Stay focused and take the time to read the questions carefully.

For the initial 6 months, drivers holding a graduated driver license in Arizona face specific restrictions: 
  • They cannot drive between midnight and 5:00 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent or guardian with a valid license. Driving alone is permitted when traveling to or from sanctioned school activities, places of employment, religious events, or during a family emergency.
  • They cannot transport more than one passenger under 18, except for siblings or when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian in the front passenger seat.
The Arizona instruction permit is valid for a duration of 12 months. Use this time to complete an Arizona MVD-approved driver education program, and after holding the permit for a minimum of 6 months, you can apply for a graduated license.

If you fail the DMV written test on your first attempt, you can return to an MVD office or an MVD Authorized Third Party office the next business day to retake the test. If you fail the exam three times, you have to pay another application fee to take it again.
