Anyone who drives a motor vehicle on public streets or highways in Minnesota must carry a valid driver’s license or learner’s permit. Your eyes will be screened when you apply for, or renew, your driver’s license or learner’s permit. The MN DMV written test contains multiple-choice and true or false questions that evaluate your knowledge and understanding of Minnesota road rules, road signs and safety rules. The MN DMV test is based on information contained in the official Minnesota Driver's Manual, and consists of 40 questions. You need 32 correct answers to pass (80%).

You will need to present two primary documents, such as a passport or certificate of birth, or one primary document and one secondary document, such as a Social Security Card. At certain exam stations, the test is available in multiple languages, including Hmong, Vietnamese, Somali, Spanish, and Russian. If you have difficulty understanding English, oral exams are conducted at the Anoka, Eagan, and downtown Saint Paul/Town Square exam stations. It's important to note that individuals must bring their own interpreter, who should hold a valid Minnesota driver's license.

Individuals under 18 with an instruction permit in Minnesota must drive with a licensed adult who is at least 21. If you are 18 or older, the supervising driver must be at least 18 years old.

For drivers under 18, it is illegal to use the cell phone except during emergencies. Until the age of 21, it is also illegal to consume alcohol before driving.
In Minnesota, an instruction permit is valid for two years, with the option to renew it upon the payment of a fee. This ensures you have enough time to practice driving and fulfill the necessary requirements before the road test.
