All residents who operate a motor vehicle on any South Dakota street or highway must have an South Dakota driver’s license or learner's permit. To obtain an instruction permit, you must be at least 14 years of age and pass the vision and knowledge test. The South Dakota written test covers the contents of the South Dakota Driver's Manual, and includes questions on safe driving practices, road rules, road signs and signals. The SD DMV knowledge test consists of 25 questions, and you must score 80% or higher (at least 20 correct answers) to pass. Practice with this sample DMV test to get ready for the official South Dakota written test.
1. Allow a larger space cushion when stopping:
Because of intense traffic.
At the scene of an accident.
On a hill.
2. If you miss your exit on a freeway, you should:
Signal other drivers to stop so you can turn.
Go to the next exit, get back on the freeway in the opposite direction and return to the exit you want.
Make a quick U-turn from your lane of travel.
3. This sign warns drivers of:
sharp right turn
A side road.
A cross road.
A sharp turn.
4. This road sign means:
bicycle crossing sign
Yield right-of-way to bicycles.
Bicycles cross or ride beside traffic.
Yield to motorcyles, but not to bicycles.
5. This white sign means you:
left turn yield on green
May turn left on a green light when it is safe to do so.
May turn left only on a green arrow.
Must wait for the solid green light before you turn left.
