Drivers who want to drive combination vehicles must pass the combination vehicles test. The Utah CDL combination test consists of 20 questions, and you'll need at least 16 correct answers to pass (80%). The test covers the combination vehicles section of the Utah CDL Manual. Frequently Asked Questions

To obtain an entry-level learner permit in Utah, you must be 15 years old. After obtaining the permit, you can apply for a class D driver license. Here are the requirements:
  • If you are 17 or younger, it’s mandatory to complete a driver education course and hold the permit for six months.

Restrictions with a learner permit:
  • If you are 15, 16, or 17 years old, you can drive only if accompanied by an approved driving instructor, parent, or legal guardian who is a licensed driver, occupying the seat beside you. You can also transport other passengers.
  • If you are 18 years or older, you can drive only if accompanied by a person 21 years or older, who is a licensed driver and occupies the seat beside you. You can also transport other passengers.
Restrictions with a driver license:
  • If you are under 17 years old, you can drive alone except from 12 am to 5 am unless:
- accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old, occupying the seat beside you;
- for agricultural, work, or school activities;
- in emergency situations.
  • If you are under 18, for the first six months after obtaining your driver's license, you can transport only family members unless accompanied by a licensed driver who is 21 years or older, or for agricultural assignments or emergencies.

The Utah permit remains valid for a duration of 18 months. If you need to renew your permit or if it expires, you have to pay a fee, complete the application process again, and retake the DMV written test.

If you fail your DMV written test in Utah, you have three chances to pass the exam within six months. If you don't pass after three attempts, you must pay another fee for three additional attempts within six months.
