If your brakes stop working, you should first:

Sound your horn to warn other drivers.
Flash your lights at oncoming traffic.
Try to build up brake pressure by pumping the brake pedal several times.
Shift into neutral.
Explanation

If your brakes fail while driving, quickly pump the brake pedal. This may build enough pressure to restore braking power and allow you to stop. If that doesn’t work, gently apply the parking brake to help slow the vehicle. Shift into lower gears and look for a safe place to bring the vehicle to a stop. If necessary, steer the tires against the curb or roadside edge to help reduce speed.
Once the vehicle has come to a complete stop, call for help. Do not attempt to drive again without functioning brakes.

⚠️ Note: This advice applies only to vehicles without Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS).
If your vehicle has ABS, do not pump the brakes. Instead, apply firm, continuous pressure on the brake pedal. You can determine whether your vehicle has ABS by checking the dashboard indicator light or your owner’s manual.
