Anyone operating a motor vehicle or motorcycle on public roadways in the State of New Mexico must have a driver license or learner's permit. To get a license, you must pass a written and road test in addition to a vision screening. Practice with this sample test to familiarize yourself with the format of the New Mexico driver's license test. The NM MVD written test is designed to check your knowledge of road rules, road signs, traffic laws and safety rules. Everything you need to know is covered in the New Mexico Driver's Manual. The MVD written test consists of 25 questions, and you'll need at least 18 correct answers to pass (72%).
1. When merging onto a freeway, drivers should:
Accelerate to the speed of the freeway traffic.
Proceed slowly while waiting for an opening.
Merge over two lanes at once and speed up.
Accelerate to a speed that is faster than the freeway traffic.
2. You are driving forward out of your driveway:
You have the right of way over pedestrians on a sidewalk area.
You must slow down before crossing the sidewalk area.
If you honk your horn, you can cross the sidewalk area without stopping.
You must come to a complete stop before crossing the sidewalk area.
3. There is no crosswalk and a pedestrian is crossing your lane ahead. You should:
Sound a sharp blast of your horn and let the pedestrian finish crossing the street.
Slow down as you pass the pedestrian.
Make eye contact and then pass the pedestrian.
Stop and let the pedestrian finish crossing the street.
4. When entering a roadway from a driveway, you should:
Yield only to the vehicles coming from your left.
Turn on your low beam headlights.
Yield to the vehicles already on the road.
Speed up and enter as quickly as possible.
5. Drivers may not be able to drive well if they are:
Not wasted enough.
Angry or depressed.
Happy.
Keeping their mind on their driving.
