Explanation
Following a fire truck too closely can interfere with its ability to respond quickly and safely to an emergency. It can also put other drivers and passengers at risk if the fire truck suddenly brakes or swerves to avoid an obstacle. For these reasons, it is against the law to follow any fire apparatus responding to an emergency closer than 500 feet.
