If you operate a motor vehicle on public roadways in Hawaii you are required to have a driver’s license or learner’s permit. You will be given the following tests when you apply for a driver’s license or instruction permit as required: 1. Rules of the Road 2. Vision 3. Recognition of traffic control devices. You must pass these tests before you are permitted to take the road test. The HI DMV written test is based on the information contained in the Hawaii Driver's Manual, and is designed to check your knowledge of road signs, traffic law, road rules and safe driving practices. The knowledge test consists of 30 questions, and you'll need at least 24 correct answers to pass (80%).
1. Drivers entering a roundabout:
Must travel in a clockwise direction.
Must stop when the traffic signal turns red.
Must follow the vehicle in front of them closely.
Must yield to traffic already in the circle.
2. This sign means:

Stop sign ahead.
U-turns not allowed.
Do not enter a road or off ramp where the sign is posted.
Side road ahead.
3. When parking on a public road, drivers should:
Allow as mush space for passing vehicles as possible.
Park with their front wheels turning left.

4. You should stop before crossing railroad tracks:
Even when the railroad tracks are out-of-service.
Any time a train may be approaching, whether or not you can see it.

The lane to the right may pass.
Passing is permitted in either direction.

10. Drive below the posted speed limit when:
You are on a four lane road.
Anything makes conditions less than perfect.
Entering a highway where there are other cars.
Others drive below the speed limit.

Frequently Asked Questions

For individuals under 18, Hawaii has introduced a graduated licensing program with specific age requirements for each stage:

  • Instructional permit ? you need to be at least 15 ½ years old.
  • Provisional license ? you need to be between 16 and 18 years old and have held a permit for at least 6 months with no traffic violations.

To take the DMV written test in Hawaii, make sure to bring the following documents on the day of the exam:
  • A compiled and printed driver license application

  • Two proofs of residence address

The Hawaii DMV test consists of 30 questions about various aspects of driving regulations and road safety. These questions are based on the official manual, so it's important to study it well to maximize your chances of passing the exam.

When you get the instructional permit, you can drive only under the supervision of a driver aged 21 or older. After obtaining a provisional driver's license, the following restrictions apply:

  • You cannot transport more than one person under 18 without the supervision of a licensed parent/legal guardian, except for your family members.
  • You are not allowed to drive between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. without supervision, unless for school or work activities approved by your parents or your employer.
The Hawaii instruction permit is valid for one year from the date of issuance. It can be renewed within 30 days before the expiration date or up to 90 days after the expiration date. However, if the permit is not renewed within 30 days after expiration, you have to wait 180 days before taking the road test.
